Gisele and her family moved from Poland to Vienna, Austria during the First World War. Gisele was a dedicated student and earned good grades for her work. She longed to attend university like her brothers, but the girls in her family were expected to pursue secretarial work. Gisele completed her studies in 1918 and worked in Vienna as a secretary. On March 12, 1938, Nazi Germany annexed Austria (the Anschluss). Following the Anschluss, Gisele lost her job because she was Jewish. In an effort to escape the Nazis, Gisele was smuggled into France. There, she survived the Holocaust by hiding her Jewish identity. Her parents and two older brothers perished in the Holocaust.
