Student Activity – A black dress with ADEFA label

Suggested time: 15-20 minutes

Grades: 8+

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: study the ADEFA dress using the 3D model function, read The Rise of Nazism and watch the two reflections videos about the ADEFA organization.

Consider the origins and activities of ADEFA as you answer the following questions:

  1. ADEFA was a voluntary organization. What factors might have caused a German clothing manufacturer to join ADEFA?
  2. Make a list of the advantages and disadvantages for a German manufacturer in deciding whether to join ADEFA.
  3. Study the entries on the timeline. What connections and observations can you make about events on the timeline and the formation of ADEFA in May 1933?
  4. What factors might have caused consumers in Nazi Germany to purchase ADEFA clothing? And what factors might have caused consumers not to do so?
  5. What does this dress tell you about the impact of the choices made by manufacturers and consumers on the Nazis Party’s rise to power?
  6. In his reflections video, “The ADEFA Organization,” Claus Jahnke describes how he has found ADEFA garments all over the world — Germany, Vancouver, Toronto, England, France, Sweden. Why might consumers purchase ADEFA clothing after the Second World War?

Extension Question:
