Star of David Badge
The Star of David is a traditional symbol of Judaism. The Nazi regime forced Jews over the age of six to wear a yellow Star of David badge on their outer clothing. Wearing the badge was humiliating and isolating. It branded Jews and allowed the Nazis to monitor and control their movements. It also made it easier to round up the Jewish population. Jews could be fined, arrested or even killed for failing to wear the yellow star.
This badge was worn by Toni Neumann in Theresienstadt ghetto-camp. Toni was one of 1,200 Jews released from Theresienstadt and transported to freedom in Switzerland near the end of the Second World War. This was the result of an agreement between a high-ranking Nazi official and the Allies. Under the agreement, money was paid to the SS in exchange for the release of Jewish prisoners.
