This is one of several sketches made by Gerry Waldston during his time in a Canadian internment camp. Gerry was a German Jew who had left Germany because of Nazi persecution in June 1939. He found refuge in Great Britain. After Britain declared war on Germany, the British government classified Gerry as an “enemy alien.” In 1940, he was deported with hundreds of other Jewish refugees to Canada. They were interned in camps in Ontario, New Brunswick and Quebec.
